Comparative antimicrobial activity of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil and thiosemicarbazones derived from this oil

Introduction: The presence of microbes in our environment is always a permanent public health problem. In this context, research on natural treatment, less expensive and accessible to fight these microbial germs would be beneficial. Methods: During work, molecules thiosemicarbazones due their numerous biological activities were hemi-synthesized situ the essential oil Cymbopogon citratus order evaluate antimicrobial activities. Results: Analysis extracted by hydrodistillation revealed 72.91% citral. Citralthiosemicarbazone (CThio) citral 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (CPthio) with interesting yields 83% 91%, respectively. After purification confirmation structures molecules, three substances tested eleven strains microbes. Determination inhibition diameters showed that activity best over 80% strains. However, largest diameter (26 mm) was noted CPthio against Salmonella typhi R 30951401. determination minimum inhibitory concentrations remains more active smallest value 0.3125 mg / ml Micrococcus luteus. lower bactericidal also obtained Enterococcus foecalis ATCC 29212.
